Which news API has the best free tier?
Short answer: NewsData.io for an ongoing commercial-style project, GDELT if links and metadata are enough, and the Guardian if you need free full text for non-commercial work. Every free tier here has a catch, listed in the right-hand column.
| API | Free allowance | Main catch |
|---|---|---|
| GDELT Project | Unlimited, no key | Metadata and links only |
| NewsData.io | 200 credits a day | 48-hour lookback; streamed data delayed 12 hours |
| Guardian Open Platform | About 5,000 calls a day | Non-commercial; one publisher |
| NYT Developer APIs | About 4,000 requests a day | Non-commercial; no article text |
| Finnhub | 60 calls a minute | Personal, non-commercial use |
| Tavily | 1,000 credits a month | No archive |
| Serper Google News | 2,500 queries | One-time allowance (third-party reports) |
| Diffbot | 10,000 credits | Five calls a minute |

| Exa | $20 starting credit | Then $7 per 1,000 searches |
| Massive (ex-Polygon.io) News | Free Basic stocks plan | Two years of news history |
| SerpApi Google News | About 250 searches a month | Third-party figure |
| Mediastack | 100 requests a month | Gone after a day of testing |
Not listed: NewsCatcher and Quantexa offer trials only, Perigon offers a trial before its $25 plan, and Brave reportedly ended its free plan in 2026.
What makes a news API good to build with?
The best test is how much code you end up writing around it. A news API that returns five copies of the same wire story, cuts the article body at 200 characters and dates half its results by crawl time will cost you a deduplication step, a scraper and a date parser before your feature works. One that clusters stories, returns full text and gives a reliable publication date saves all three. That difference is the main reason NewsCatcher and Perigon rank above cheaper, simpler APIs on this page.
Docs and SDKs matter less than vendors claim, but they still matter. Every API here is REST with JSON responses, so a curl command gets you started anywhere. Official SDKs earn their keep later, in retries, pagination helpers and typed responses. NewsCatcher, Webz.io, Massive and Finnhub maintain several; GNews, Mediastack and Marketaux have none and do not really need them.
Rate limits and paging are where projects stall. Webz.io allows one request per second by default. NewsAPI.ai returns at most 100 articles per search, so a large pull becomes many billed calls, and some developers report friction with its pagination and rate limits. DataForSEO's cheap queue is asynchronous, which means polling or a callback endpoint. Before you commit, write the loop that fetches a full day of results for your real query and time it.
Which news APIs have official SDKs?
Short answer: about half do, most often for Python and Node. The rest are simple enough to call with any HTTP client, and a few add webhooks, WebSocket streams, bulk files or MCP servers for agents.

|---|---|
| NewsCatcher | REST API, JSON, Python SDK, Node.js SDK, Java SDK, Webhooks, S3/bulk delivery |

Which news APIs made this list, and why?
We collected the APIs developers keep naming in searches like "best free news API", "news API for AI agents" and "NewsAPI.org alternatives", added the finance and Google News endpoints that come up in the same threads, and kept the ones that met these conditions:
- A developer can get access: self-serve signup, a free key or at least a trial. Sales-only licensed feeds such as Factiva, AP and Reuters were left out for that reason, and Bing News Search was dropped after Microsoft retired it in August 2025.
- Public documentation: endpoints and parameters you can read before signing up
- Stated limits: some published figure for requests, credits or history, even if third-party sources disagree with it
- Still running in 2026: APIs with an unclear future, such as the former Aylien API, stay listed with a low score and a warning
Top 10 news APIs for developers in 2026
The ten highest-scoring APIs in brief. All 28 APIs have a full review with pricing, limits and alternatives.
1. NewsCatcher
Editor's pickEnriched news API that does the dedup, clustering and geotagging before your code sees a response
Most news APIs hand you raw articles and leave the cleanup to you. NewsCatcher, a Y Combinator Summer 2022 company founded by Artem Bugara and Maksym Sugonyaka (registered in Delaware, team mostly in Europe), does that cleanup on its side: articles come back summarised, deduplicated, clustered into stories and tagged with entities. Version 3 of the API covers 140,000+ sources in 50+ languages with more than 2 billion articles since 2019 (per company website; independently unverifiable), and a separate Local News endpoint adds a location and a confidence score to each story. Official SDKs exist for Python, Node and Java, and the company reports SOC 2 Type II and a 99.95% uptime SLA. The catch for a solo developer is price discovery: there is a pay-as-you-go trial, but production plans are quoted by sales.
Advantages
- +Deduplication and story clustering run server-side, so you skip writing your own similarity matching
- +Three official SDKs (Python, Node, Java) plus webhooks and S3 delivery
- +The Local News endpoint returns a place name with a 0–10 confidence score per article
Things to consider
- -You cannot see production prices without talking to sales
- -History begins in 2019, so long backfills need another source
- -A small company is behind the enterprise SLA
Best for: Developers who want clean, deduplicated news without writing post-processing
2. NewsData.io
Editor's pickGlobal news API with a daily free allowance and plain query parameters
NewsData.io, operated from Noida, India, is the API on this list that most developers can get running in a lunch break. Signup gives a key immediately, the free plan refills 200 credits every day (each credit returns up to 10 articles), and the query parameters are plain enough that a first working request needs no SDK, although an official Python client exists. Coverage is claimed at 99,000+ sources in 206 countries and 89 languages (per company website; independently unverifiable). The free plan only looks back 48 hours and delays streamed data by 12 hours. Paid plans start at $199.99 a month for 20,000 credits and six months of history and go up to $1,299.99 for 1 million credits and 10 years. Public profiles disagree on the founding year: LinkedIn says 2022, some directories say 2019.
Advantages
- +The free 200 credits reset every day, which suits ongoing side projects better than a one-off trial
- +Filters for 206 countries and 89 languages work the same on free and paid plans
- +Plain GET parameters, so curl is enough for a first test
Things to consider
- -Nothing sits between the free tier and $199.99 a month
- -Free accounts see only the last 48 hours
- -Company background is thin and the founding date varies by source
Best for: Developers who want a working news call within minutes, free
3. Perigon
Editor's pickEnriched news API with public plans from $25 and saved-query monitors
Perigon is an Austin, Texas startup founded in 2022 by Joshua Dziabiak and Josh Rickel, backed by a $5 million seed round that LiveOak Ventures led in February 2024. For developers its main draw is that the pricing page tells you what you will pay: Individual at $25 a month for personal use, Startup at $250 with limited commercial rights, and Commercial at $1,250 with real-time data, an SLA and SSO. Every tier returns enriched articles with entities, topics, summaries and story clusters from 230,000+ sources (per company website; independently unverifiable), and Monitors let you save a query and get matches on a schedule. Plan for the delay: below Commercial, data lags by an hour unless you pay for the real-time add-on.
Advantages
- +The cheapest plan already includes enrichment, which most rivals reserve for higher tiers
- +Monitors replace a cron job and a diffing script with a saved query
- +Python and Node SDKs, plus webhooks for pushed results
Things to consider
- -Data lags by an hour below the $1,250 plan unless you buy real-time
- -The Startup tier caps you at 10,000 requests a month
- -Republishing full article text is outside the license
Best for: Indie developers and startups wanting enriched data at a known price
Token-priced news API that groups articles into cross-language events
NewsAPI.ai is sold by Event Registry d.o.o., a Ljubljana company that left the Jožef Stefan Institute's AI lab as a spin-off in 2017. Its query model is built around events: articles about the same real-world story in different languages are linked into one event record, and each article carries concepts mapped to Wikipedia entities, categories and sentiment. Developers get an open-source Python client on GitHub and a published token price list, with recent-news searches at one token and archive searches costing more; the 5K-token plan is about $90 a month. Expect to write paging code. A search returns at most 100 articles, so bigger pulls take many calls, each billed in tokens, and some developers report pagination and rate-limit friction on larger jobs (user reports; independently unverifiable).
Advantages
- +Cross-language event linking that would take months to build yourself
- +Concepts resolve to Wikipedia entities, which makes filters exact
- +Token prices are public, so you can estimate a bill before signing up
Things to consider
- -A 100-article cap per search means writing and paying for many paginated calls
- -Developers report pagination and rate-limit friction on large jobs (user reports; independently unverifiable)
- -Archive searches cost more tokens, and unused tokens expire monthly
- -The query language has a learning curve
Best for: Developers building multilingual event or research tools
Two-endpoint news API with commercial use from €49.99 a month
GNews keeps its surface small: one search endpoint, one top-headlines endpoint, and filters for country, language and category. That small surface is why developers like it, because the docs fit on one page and a working call takes a few minutes. The free tier allows 100 requests a day for non-commercial work with 30 days of history. Essential, at €49.99 a month, adds commercial rights, 1,000 requests a day and articles back to 2020, while Business and Enterprise raise the daily quota to 5,000 and 25,000. The weak spot is the company itself. The site credits a studio called Gigathink and gives only a contact email, so its size, founding year and support capacity are unknown.
Advantages
- +The whole API can be learned in one sitting
- +One of the cheapest routes to commercial use, and yearly billing takes about 20% off
- +Paid plans return full article content
Things to consider
- -Nothing before 2020
- -No entity, sentiment or clustering fields
- -An unnamed operator makes support and continuity hard to judge
Best for: Small commercial apps needing a cheap, simple news feed
Open-web news feed with field-based queries and history back to 2008
Webz.io was founded in 2014 as Webhose.io and is run from the Tel Aviv area by co-founder and CEO Ran Geva. Its News API claims 3.5 million new articles a day from 350,000+ sources in 170+ languages (per company website; independently unverifiable), and the same token can query blogs, forums, reviews and dark-web feeds. For developers it is powerful but not quick to learn: queries use a field syntax (title:, language:, sentiment:) and anything older than 30 days goes through a separate archive endpoint that reaches 2008. Each account gets $5 of free credit a month and SDKs for Python, Node and Java. The default rate limit of one request per second is the thing to plan around.
Advantages
- +The longest web-crawled archive among the commercial APIs here
- +$5 of monthly credit lets you run real queries with no card
- +Satire, bias and fake-news flags on articles make filtering easier
Things to consider
- -One request per second by default slows bulk jobs unless you negotiate more
- -The field syntax takes time to learn
- -Large contracts are expensive, with Vendr reporting a median annual spend near $237,500
Best for: Data engineers backfilling years of news for datasets
Embeddings-based search API with a news filter and page contents in one call
Exa Labs started in San Francisco in 2021 as Metaphor, founded by Will Bryk and Jeff Wang, and raised an $85 million Series B led by Benchmark in September 2025. It runs its own web index searched by meaning, so a query like "startups cutting cloud costs" can match articles that never use those words. Set the category to news and ask for contents, and one request returns cleaned text you can drop into a prompt. As of 2026 search costs $7 per 1,000 requests with contents for the top 10 results included, and new accounts start with $20 of credit. SDKs cover Python and TypeScript, and an official MCP server plugs it into agent tools. It is a search engine at heart, so expect weaker coverage of small regional outlets and fuzzier publication dates than a dedicated news API gives.
Advantages
- +Finds relevant coverage that keyword queries miss
- +Contents come with results, so there is no second fetch-and-parse step
- +An MCP server and Python and TypeScript SDKs are official
Things to consider
- -No source taxonomy, sentiment or story clusters
- -Publication dates come from crawl metadata and can be off
- -Monitoring thousands of queries a day gets expensive
Best for: RAG and agent developers needing semantic news retrieval
Search API built for agent tool calls, with a news topic mode
Tavily, founded by CEO Rotem Weiss, is a search API designed to be called by LLM agents, and its topic=news mode limits results to recent coverage with extracted text ready for a prompt. It is the quickest way on this list to give a LangChain or LlamaIndex agent a news tool, since both frameworks ship Tavily integrations. Nebius, the Nasdaq-listed AI cloud company, agreed to buy Tavily in February 2026 (Bloomberg put the price at $275 million) and later said the deal had closed, keeping the brand and pricing. Credits cost about $0.008 each on pay-as-you-go, a basic search uses one and an advanced search two, and 1,000 credits a month are free. Because it is a search tool, there is no archive, source list or clustering to work with.
Advantages
- +Agent frameworks already support it, so setup is mostly an API key
- +1,000 free credits a month cover a prototype
- +Extracted content arrives with results, with no separate scraper
Things to consider
- -No archive, so historical questions go unanswered
- -No control over which sources are searched
- -Roadmap may change under new ownership
Best for: Agent builders adding a news tool in a few lines
Points-based news API with radius search, sentiment and a URL extractor
skycraft GmbH, a Dresden company that has built developer APIs since 2015, runs World News API. Besides article search with language, sentiment and location filters, it has front-page and top-news endpoints and an extractor that returns clean text from any article URL, which is useful even if your news comes from somewhere else. SDKs are generated from its OpenAPI spec, so most languages are covered. Billing is in points: the free plan gives 50 a day but requires a backlink and allows one request a second, Reporter costs $39 a month for 500 a day, and the largest self-serve plan is $1,779. Team size and coverage claims are not independently documented.
Advantages
- +Radius search is rare in this price range
- +The extractor cleans any article URL, including ones from other APIs
- +OpenAPI spec means client libraries for most languages
Things to consider
- -The free plan needs a backlink and runs at one request a second
- -Different endpoints cost different points, so bills are harder to predict
- -Coverage figures are self-reported
Best for: Location-aware apps on a small budget
The news API most tutorials use, with a free plan limited to development
If you learned to call a REST API from a tutorial, there is a fair chance it used NewsAPI.org's /everything or /top-headlines endpoint. That familiarity is its biggest asset: community libraries exist in most languages and almost every error message has a forum answer. The operator publishes no legal name, location or team size. The free Developer plan gives 100 requests a day, delays articles by 24 hours, covers only the last month and is barred from staging and production. Going live means the Business plan at $449 a month (250,000 requests, five years of history), and an uptime SLA only comes with Advanced at $1,749. Article content in responses is truncated.
Advantages
- +Help is easy to find for nearly any problem you hit
- +Endpoints have stayed stable for years
- +Five years of history on the Business plan
Things to consider
- -The free plan is not allowed in staging or production
- -Going live costs $449 a month, with nothing in between
- -Content is truncated, so full text needs your own fetching
- -No SLA until the $1,749 plan
Best for: Learning projects and prototypes that follow existing tutorials
Which news API fits your project?
Short answer: match the API to the job. An agent tool, a trading app and a dataset backfill each have a different best choice, and the top-rated API wins only the first.
| Project | Recommended API | Why | Entry price |
|---|---|---|---|
| Current news for a RAG app or agent | NewsCatcher | Duplicates are merged before the response, so the model sees each story once | Custom quote |
| A news tool in LangChain or LlamaIndex | Tavily | Both frameworks already ship a Tavily integration | $30/mo |
| Finding coverage similar to an article | Exa | Embeddings search matches meaning instead of keywords | $7 per 1,000 searches |
| A side project that runs every day for free | NewsData.io | The free allowance resets daily instead of expiring | $199.99/mo |
| News near the user in a mobile app | World News API | Latitude, longitude and radius filters from $39 a month | $39/mo |
| One story tracked across languages | NewsAPI.ai (Event Registry) | Event records link articles about the same event in different languages | $90/mo |
| Ticker news with sentiment | Marketaux | Entities and per-entity sentiment on every article, free plan included | $29/mo |
| Google News rank tracking at volume | DataForSEO Google News | About $0.60 per 1,000 result pages in the Standard queue | $0.60 per 1,000 SERPs |
| Backfilling a decade of news for a dataset | Webz.io | Archive endpoint that reaches back to 2008 | Pay-as-you-go |
| Free full-text articles for NLP coursework | Guardian Open Platform | Complete article bodies with consistent tags, free for non-commercial use | Free |
How do you evaluate a news API as a developer?
Short answer: spend one afternoon on a real query. Time the first call, inspect the response body, write the paging loop, and read the terms for the environment you will deploy to.
| Check | Why it matters | How to test it | Warning sign |
|---|---|---|---|
| Time to first call | Signup friction predicts support friction | Clock signup to first 200 response | A sales call before you can see a response |
| Response body | Summaries and embeddings need the full article | Check the content field length on the plan you will buy | Text cut off with a "read more" marker |
| Duplicates | Syndicated stories inflate counts and waste prompt tokens | Search a big wire story and count near-identical results | No cluster or dedup field anywhere in the schema |
| Paging and limits | Bulk jobs fail on caps you only meet at volume | Fetch one full day of results for your real query | Low per-page caps billed per call, or one request a second |
| Freshness | Alerts and agents go stale with every hour of delay | Compare publish time with the time the API returns it | Delays mentioned only in the plan comparison table |
| Terms of use | A free key that is fine in dev can be banned in production | Read the clauses on production, commercial use and storage | "Development only" or "non-commercial" on the plan you tested |
What should developers know about news APIs in 2026?
Tutorials age badly in this market. Microsoft retired the Bing News Search API in August 2025, Polygon.io became Massive in October 2025, Nebius bought Tavily in 2026, and Brave reportedly moved every developer to metered billing. If a guide from 2023 tells you which key to grab, check that the product still exists under that name.
The bigger shift is that many developers now call news APIs from an agent instead of a cron job. Two kinds of tool compete for that call. Search APIs such as Tavily, Exa, Serper and Brave answer open questions well and plug into agent frameworks with little setup. Dedicated news APIs such as NewsCatcher and Perigon do better when the agent has to catch every article about a company, with real publication dates and no duplicates. Plenty of production agents end up using one of each.
Free tiers are for testing, and several say so explicitly. NewsAPI.org's free key is barred from staging and production, GNews and the Guardian are non-commercial, and Finnhub's key is personal use only. A realistic budget for a small production app is $25 to $450 a month on self-serve plans. Per-request APIs cost anywhere from about $0.60 per 1,000 Google News pages at DataForSEO to $7 per 1,000 searches at Exa, and that range matters once an agent starts calling in a loop.
How can you pay for each news API?
Short answer: monthly plans dominate, search-style APIs bill per request, and a handful sell only through contracts. This grid shows every access model each provider offers.
| API | Enterprise contract | Free tier | Free trial | Monthly plans | Open data | Pay-as-you-go |

How much does a news API cost for a developer project?
Short answer: nothing to test, $25 to $50 a month for a small commercial app, and a few hundred dollars once you need volume and history. Figures are from public pricing pages as of 2026.
| Tier | Typical cost | Examples | Good for |
|---|---|---|---|

How were the developer scores decided?
Each score reflects six things a developer runs into: how useful the free tier is, the quality of docs and official SDKs, rate limits and paging, what the response contains (full text, deduplication, enrichment), how openly prices are published, and how long it takes to get a useful first response. Data quality carries the most weight, because it decides how much code you write afterwards.
Facts come from provider pricing pages, documentation and about pages, plus press coverage of funding rounds, acquisitions and rebrands, checked in 2026. Some free-tier numbers only exist in third-party write-ups, as with Serper, Alpha Vantage and SerpApi, and the tables mark them that way. Where sources contradict each other, as with Currents API's free limit, the review says so instead of picking one. We did not run a recall benchmark across all 28 APIs. NewsAPI.ai's score also reflects the pagination and rate-limit problems developers report with it.
Nobody paid for a place or a score. NewsCatcher is first even though its prices are not public, which is a real cost for a solo developer, so if a published price is a hard requirement, start with Perigon or NewsData.io. Limits and prices on these APIs change often; confirm them on the provider's site before you build around one.
Frequently asked questions
Is there a completely free news API?
Yes. GDELT's DOC 2.0 API needs no key and costs nothing, and the Guardian and New York Times give free developer keys. All three come with limits: GDELT returns links instead of article text, the NYT returns metadata only, and the Guardian and NYT keys are for non-commercial use.
Can I use the NewsAPI.org free plan in production?
No. NewsAPI.org's Developer plan is restricted to development, and its terms exclude staging and production environments, internal tools included. Going live requires the Business plan at $449 a month. If that price is the problem, NewsData.io, GNews, Mediastack and Perigon all offer commercial use for far less.
Which news API is best for a Python project?
NewsCatcher, Perigon, NewsData.io, Webz.io, Exa, Tavily and Massive all maintain official Python SDKs, and NewsAPI.ai has an open-source Python client with many examples. For a quick script, the SDK hardly matters; for a long-running job it saves you writing retry and paging logic.
Should an AI agent use a news API or a search API?
Use a search API such as Tavily or Exa when the agent answers open questions about recent events. Use a news API such as NewsCatcher or Perigon when it must track every article about a subject, with dates you can trust and duplicates removed. Agents that do both often call one of each.
How do I avoid hitting rate limits with a news API?
Ask for the largest page size your plan allows, filter by date and source on the server instead of in your code, and cache results so repeated queries do not cost calls. For bulk history, look for a bulk or archive endpoint (Webz.io, NewsCatcher and Massive offer S3 or bulk delivery) instead of paging through search results.
